I've been using Bontrager race lit hardcases for a few years now, I've found them very good all round.

I discounted the Duranos because they don't seem to come in 700x28.

Dave R where do I buy Bontrager from? I know nothing about them

For commuting Ive used
23mm gatorskin which has good puncture resistance, but not resistant enough. Moving to 25mm gatorskins gave much better puncture resistance. Like others have said, wet weather grip is awful, but I put up with it.

Now I use marathon supreme 35mm, which after 1500km have been fine (one flat last week but I put that down to bad luck). Wet weather grip is fine, I take it on mild off road and its OK there too.

Incidentally someone mentioned conti cyclocross CX 35mm tires above which my bike had as OEM tires. They were surprisingly good with rolling resistance considering they are knobbies, but on tarmac they flatted too often for me: 3 flats in just a few hundred KMs.

Dave I like the price of the Bontrage Race Lites. I did find them at Evans but nearly £20. The James price makes them a very good option.

Mustang, thanks for the review on the Gatorskins, I'm must say I'm a bit put off on the wet weather handling as it

There I thought I had been clever and narrowed it down to two tyres at the start; now I have many more to think about. The Race Lites are looking very good, especially with the price and some encouraging reviews

If you go for them check out delivery costs before you buy.

Still part of the team !
andrew br what tyre do you recommend for handling and comfort
Sorry for the late reply Charles, I've been away watching the TofB.

For comfort and handling, I'd go for Marathon Supremes and run them slightly "soft".
Since they're quite big tyres (easily 28mm on CXP33 rims), you'll be able to drop the pressures without risking pinch flats.

Personally I shy away from anything Conti as, in general, they are so hard to get on and off the rim at the road side if you do get a flat.
I used Schwalbe Stelvio for a while before moving to Michelin Krylion, but the replacement Pro 4 Endurance has nothing like the longevity, so I'm trying Duranos now (all 25s)
Bonti Race Lite 28s on the tandem though.

I can see myself creating a spreadsheet to compare all of the suggestions. Pete, my Marathons are terrible to get on, but as I very rarely need to do so, the protection they offer makes that worthwhile, it might be the same for the Conti Gatorskins. Andrew, Supremes do look nice but they are quite pricy

Quite some years ago I used to buy wire-bead tires. They were always a pita to get on/off. But that was a long time ago and now I always use folding tires which are far away easier.

I have lots to absorb from all of this, started with two different tyres, now I'm not too sure. Will take the bike to my LBS at the weekend as I need to see the widest tyre I can fit with my mudguards. I'm now favouring Andrew BR's Marathon Supremes, if they'll fit under the mudguards
