problem is that my body can't recover in the same time span as everyone elses... look up Addison's disease. I take much longer to heal and repair. However, if no-one minds babysitting me I currently have 2 GPS's that can have routes loaded onto them and could even bully my OH into coming along... (I recently had a birthday and got a Garmin Edge 500 to upgrade from the Edge 200 I previously had...)
Once Colin knows what route he's doing (if it's the 100 mile option instead of the shorter options), you could always do as someone suggested as pick your bail out point?

Most cycling is in the head, if you think you can do it, you will.

.

. . . . . . . I've tried this ^^^ 'minimalist' approach to cycling, and whilst it has worked thus far, it is becoming increasingly difficult.. At some stage, I'm going to have to get a few miles in, or I'll get really punished on a ride.

Fair enough. How far is a normal cycling day for you though? Can you repeat the distance the next day or do you need to rest? Have you ever had a crisis due to cycling? I appreciate your medical circumstances can limit you but don't let the distance itself put you off. Taken at a nice pace with some stops and plenty of hydration/nutrition you might surprise yourself.
I can do back to back 42-43 miler days which is my commute at the moment (only 2 of them though, not 3) and have done 54 miles one day and 46 miles the next over the Christmas period, but benefit from a sleep in between. I'm often worse in the mornings until I have had my 2nd dose of steroids at midday (plus something to eat) so perk up in the afternoon... Max I have managed recently is a 75 miler with lots of climbing but that was last Easter before I broke my ribs and got rather ill again over last Summer. I also have to eat at regular times - that is critical...

My commute over to my parents' home is a minimum of 21 miles each way which I have been doing 2 or 3 times (and once 4) times a week for a while now, but I get 4 or 5 hours off in between rides out and rides home... I'm better at pacing myself nowadays... knowing when I need to stop and eat something... the commute I won't normally stop on, (lights/roundabouts being an exception obviously)... and I certainly don't aim to eat on it anymore....

Do you have a strava account? I ask because if you do you could see my rides and guess what I could manage
This was a recent (but slow due to nasty headwinds) ride... http://www.strava.com/activities/103729567. don't know what if anything you will see of it...this link may work better because I have set it to public http://connect.garmin.com/activity/423919691

More laughing at myself (two lots of PEs & heart problems in the last year or so).
I'll pack the Aspirin and Clexane then!

Puzzle game procrastinator!
I have come up with a cunning plan!

Some people fancy a 100 miler (161 km) and will be fit to do it. Some would clearly prefer the 100 km option (actually about 101 km). Tubbycyclist is riding from Hebden Bridge to Whalley (and back after the main ride), which by my preferred route is 34 km each way. Do you see where I am going with this ...?

How about shelving Morecambe as destination this time (though I would like to do it at a later date) and doing the 100 km loop instead? Those who want to get an imperial century in can meet in Hebden Bridge for an early start and ride over to Whalley. I'm sure that tc would be happy to lead the way, though if I am fit for it, I would start here as well.

Those who want to do just 100 km meet at Spring Wood after the Hebden Bridge departure time and ride down the hill into Whalley where you adjourn to a cafe and wait for the 100 milers (105 milers!) to arrive?. I know pretty much how long it takes to get to Spring Wood from HB, barring mechanicals so I can work out the times.

A list of people who might want to do the ride:
  • ColinJ
  • Accy cyclist
  • bromptonfb
  • Rockymountain
  • Pennine-Paul
  • potsy
  • MartinQ
  • coffeejo
  • Christopher
  • dan_bo
  • Alun
  • middleagecyclist
  • Mickthemove
  • Martin Archer
  • SatNavSaysStraightOn
  • smokeysmoo
  • pubrunner
  • skudupnorth
  • colly
  • tubbycyclist
PS Usual CycleChat forum ride rules apply - nobody left behind, wait at the top of hills The rides are not fast and are more about chatting, laughing and scenery, so don't come if you are desperate to average more than (say) 10-12 mph. I guess that the 100 km loop will take 5-7 hours and HB to Whalley about 2 hours each way but it depends on the speed of the slowest rider. Allow extra time for the cafe stop.

I'll pack the Aspirin and Clexane then!
I'm not sure that Aspirin plus Clexane is a good idea! I know that I am not supposed to take Aspirin, Ibuprofen etc. because of the increased bleeding risk. For that reason, Paracetamol is the only painkiller that I am supposed to take these days though I saw that bleeding is one of the possible side-effects with that too!

. Depends if it is a PE or MI. Wouldn't use both together. I can bring opiates as well!

Just ask @potsy his average mph on his 1st hundred miler was....we never leave anyone behind, I've never been left behind (well only if I've been capable and feeling guilty at being slow) so I believe in the same....what goes around and all that.
About the same as it is now

Sounds a good plan Colin, put me down for the 100km
