They are compatible. But you need cleats as well

I've got the R540's on my road bike. They are a nice bit of kit for the money. I use the blue cleats (2 degree float). They still allow a bit of lateral foot movement (which is kinder for the knees) not as much as the yellow cleats, which I found allowed my heel to clip the chain too much.

yes as already stated, they are compatible and they are supplied with 6 degree float cleats (yellow if i remember correctly)
Supplied with 6° float cleats
i have been and am still riding spd-sl with the large plastic cleats but i have just bought 2 pairs (2 bikes) of spd (small metal 2 hole cleats) pedals and a pair of spd recessed cleat shoes. this is due to spd-sl plastic cleats where out like no tomorrow and are dangerous to walk anywhere in but a supermarket polished floor is suicidal!

to give you an idea of cleat wear rate, spd-sl may last for 6-8 months or so unless you go like me where the cleats were completely useless and my left one wouldn't clip in any more where as spd cleats can last 2+ years
Cheers Ed

Right shoes and not too much walking in em 6yrs and counting on SPDs. (mind I've got 4 pairs of shoes but use 1 pair a lot)

I've got the Shimano cleat covers. They are little rubber clip on numbers with a tyre tread pattern on them. I've not worn a set of delta cleats out since I've had them
