You can pedal without being clipped in on the M520 too, although I must admit the M530 look cooler. I wonder if you could pedal on the M530 using normal trainers, for those really short rides to the shops in town. I might get a pair for the MTB.
You can (have done so myself), but only for short distances of 2miles max. You'll need some decent grippy shoes on though as apart form the SPD cage the pedal face has sod all grip, My other pedals are M647s and they are much better to ride 'sans-cleat'

Just an FYI Halfords have a sale on, inc pedals, I got the M5330 for the same price as CRC delivered to store next day. Someone else said Evans have some offers on as well, if anyone wnats them today lol

Anyone recommend a good grease BTW - I havent fitted mine as I need some, will any do or should I get a bike one?

if you're wanting a bike specific grease then Finish Line Teflon Grease (get the tube) is very good for a multitude of sins. But anything will do for pedal threads - copperslip, Castrol LM, lithium, etc. I wouldn't use light greases such as silicone or Vaseline though

There was a time, not so long ago in a world where toe strap style pedals were the only option to keeping your feet attached to the bike. In that unenlightened time there were many shoes supplied by cycling stores that did not have cleats or the option of cleats, these shoes were in many cases called touring shoes and were styled to look like normal shoes or trainers. Indeed I had many pairs of these shoes and wore them on an off the bike with no discomfort.

I have spent a couple of weekends looking for some trainers for my beloved who is not yet ready for toe straps yet alone clip-ins. In the end I found some in Sports Direct that fitted the bill, The main thing to look for is a good stiff (as possible) sole a reasonably smooth 'tread pattern' on the sole to ease the process of sliding the foot into and out of the pedal and preferably a double layer on the outside of the shoe where the strap will grip to spread the pressure. This was the basis of a standard cycling shoe before the clip-ins took over the world.
