The older I get, the faster I used to be ...

I employ the @I like Skol method of cleaning my bike, ie not at all unless it gets caught in the rain

On the odd occasion I forget this method and actually want to ride a nice gleaming bike then it's the baby wipes and rags method.

Likewise.

And car shampoo is only washing up liquid with a higher price.
Car shampoo often includes wax to give a nice shine at the end - I'm sure that'll be lovely on your dishes.;)

It works for me. My commuter bike is totally unwashed and yet completely reliable. Maintenance is carried out in a preventative manner but on an as needed basis. The bike looks exactly the way I want it to, which, just like me is fit for purpose and well used

I usually use car shampoo, and car wax, usually Megulars'. Always works well for me, last number of years. I've never had anything in the way of a bicycle that anyone would exhibit or envy, but I like to keep things well maintained. Good for morale.

It's just a bike FFS! It gets dirty. It gets scratched and battered. It gets broken, even. That thing you ride isn't the Mona Lisa. It doesn't matter very much. You don't sell it to Tate Britain. Dirt rocks.

I don't know, I think a lugged steel touring bicycle in my size nowadays would be kind of hard to come by, and dear to cost. So it matters quite a bit. Even if it is 30 years old.
