I can recommend Three PAYG 321
I switched over recently and it's been fine for me, as I'm a low user of mins / texts... the credit doesn't expire, cheap pricing. 3p calls / 2p texts / 1p for data

http://www.three.co.uk/Store/Pay_As_You_Go_Price_Plans

(..and for anyone who wants to do some reading , head over to http://www.hotukdeals.com/tag/payg. for a very big list of PAYG offers - though most of them are for phones there are some for sim only as well.)

I don't tend to believe what one company says about another's pricing when it's advertising it's costs! And even on PAYG O2 seem to have multiple pricing structures...

I'll do some further looking around before deciding. As it"s not going to get much use beyond the odd text, I won't expect to be topping up more than a couple of times a year, I'm guessing.
Tesco, £10 sim
i think - some time ago

but add £10 - they give you +£20 which expires in 30days...then still have the £10 top-up...works for me as i use little

My smartphone is with Tesco so will look into that deal too.

Giffgaff should be fine, I've also used them and they are clearer about the pricing. It doesn't sound like the difference in costs is even much of a worry for you! Just a question of the topup lasting as long as possible.

Indeed but the are monthyly top ups rather than a payg with no time limits which the OP wanted so not really comparable

All I'm saying is that at Christmas when I was trying to work out the best deal for my mum, the way the O2 pricing was displayed on their web site wasn't very clear, that's it! I'm not calling out some big conspiracy just some annoying marketing techniques. On top of which it would be in Giffgaff's favour to show the worst possible O2 price as a comparison, it might be entirely correct, but it could also be more crafty marketing.... Just like the various supermarkets advertising how they are the cheapest based on some comparison they have done using their own criteria....

I'm on Virgin PAYG, it has the advantage of the credit never expiring so for me how rarely uses his mobile £5 can last for months.

why not just put your norm sim in the second phone when your using it and put it back in your normal phone when you need to

Considered doing that, but sometimes my smartphone loses picture sending ability if the sim is removed and replaced. I know - annoying!

Just to finish this thread off...

Went into Sainsburys today, wasn't going to bother (as their payg sim was £1 and the explanatory advert along with it wasn't answering all my questions). Then at the checkout, we got given a voucher to get the sim for free, which tipped the scales. Got one. Got home. Bunged the sim in, rang up, explained what I wanted the phone for, asked a few questions, stuck a tenner credit on it. Was told as long as I send a text every couple of months, the credit won't run out automatically. Sorted! 8p/min calls, 4p texts. For the usage I envisage, that's fine.
