@Telemark (or anyone else for that matter) from your knowledge of Youth Hostels do they provide lockers for storage? I was thinking if everyone needed to bring a padlock to secure their stuff, or is it done on trust...

I think rooms have keys, but it depends on whether you share with strangers or not whether you feel it's safe ...
Can't remember lockers, to be honest . Bring a hand bag :giggle::girl:, manbag, bum bag, money belt, cycle jersey, big pockets for your essentials (keys, wallet, phone, possibly camera?)

I did a bit of digging last night and it looks like Lochranza YH has lockers but Port Charlotte YH doesn't, so as per T's suggestion above it's handbags and big pockets for the valuables! I've emailed Port Charlotte anyway just to check if they don't have lockers and asked a couple of other questions so will post up if/when I get a reply.

Hi all!
I'm injured ...
Not to worry though, my cycling abilities are not affected, just my walking ones:blush:
I was dancing a bit too enthusiastically at a wedding last Saturday, jumping up and down at the beat of some 80's music - as one does  forgot I'm not 20 anymore, hit the wooden floor hard with my foot, my already damaged knee did not like the impact, has been sore ever since.
Been ok on the commute, so no probs as long as we don't go for long walks.
I'll be probably completely mobile again in time for the tour

FFS, is there anyone NOT injured?!? Everyone needs to wrap themselves in cotton wool for the next 4 weeks (I'll do that after Sunday...). GWS @Pat "5mph" , and no more dancing!!

Hi All

I emailed the Islay SYHA with some questions and those lovely people have come back to me with the following email and attached FAQ's:

Greetings from Islay.
Thank you for your email about coming to stay here in August.
Your party will be in 2 twin rooms and 1 x 6-bedded dormitory room private to yourselves, therefore you will be able to secure your belongings in your rooms and lock your doors. Would you be happy with that ?
The bike shed is really very large indeed – no problem at all for 10 bikes, we have had up to 30 bikes in there and still lots of space – it occupies a large part of the ground floor of the building.
The village has a Spar shop – they have a general grocery stock with limited vegetables available.
The main supermarket is in Bowmore – the Co-op.
I am attaching a sheet we have called ‘Frequently asked questions - answers’ – this has all sorts of information about the village, the island, the hostel…
But please do get back to us if there is anything more you would like to know – we’ll be happy to help.
The twin rooms will have their beds made up and towels provided, for the 6 in the dormitory the bedding is provided but they will have to make their own beds and towels can be hired for £2.
See you in August ! – and do email back if you would like any more information.

So all looks good to me, we can lock the doors to our rooms so belongings should be secure - I'll try and find out the same about Lochranza. Up to each individual if you want to carry a towel or hire one.

The attachment has lots of good advice about eating out, etc so well worth a read - just one other point is that it says the ATM "may" charge for withdrawing cash, so if that goes against your morals it might be worth bringing enough spending money with you.

Hope everyone is ok with that, if there are any other questions please let me know - 4 weeks tomorrow!! :wahhey:

One other thing to note is that the Islay hostel shuts between 10am-5pm so on our "day off" we will all have to find something to do between these times - I don't forsee that being a problem but thought it worth mentioning just in case anyone was planning any long-lies!!
