Carefully and a long time. Do not try to dry them on the radiator or it melts the waterproof membrane and kills them - DAMHIKT

I tend to wash them with my merino stuff and waterproofs at 30 degC and using soap flakes, but I'm not sure what the manufacturer suggests

I've just given mine another thorough test. Mountain biking, (or rather walking) along a marshy bridleway on Muncaster fell. On a number of occasions I sank in far enough for the water to flood in over the top of my shoes (but not socks), my feet are still dry

Thanks, I'd be interested which pair you have and if the sizing is accurate? Cheers, Mark

The ones I was using are these - http://www.wiggle.co.uk/sealskinz-thin-ankle-length-socks
I have size 10-10.5 feet and the Large size are just big enough. If my feet were size 11s I'd probably go up a size.

The downside with these socks is that if water gets in the top then it stays there, and they take far longer than normal socks to dry. They are also less elastic than normal socks and not as soft.

Thanks, that's the ones I've been looking at - one the water gets in my feet are wet anyway, so if anything can keep it out longer it's all good! Cheers, M

Very sorry to see that you are becoming fellow non-attendants of this fabulous tour, @Edwardoka and @Gee_Dee.

@Fubar, given that it's still a long time before the full bill needs to be paid, the SYHA may be OK about removing the room from your booking, if no other takers can be found ... it's not like they don't have plenty of opportunity to re-sell the room.

hi guys, just came across your thread, any chance i could throw my hat into the ring if spaces available?

Hi Heather

It should be easy enough to add you in, though a quick glance at the SYHA Port Charlotte website for 16-17 August shows only shared accommodation (i.e. Dorms) available which is what the 7 "boys" are in or a Quad room (2 beds and 2 bunks) - @Pat "5mph" and @Ellebells are in a twin room at present, and Pat thought there was some more interest in a double room I have available due to a change in circumstances - what are your preferences?? I agreable I could see if I could upgrade the current ladies Double Room to a Quad for ladies only and offset the spare Double - or would you be happy to share with someone else (i.e. another lady)? I'm assuming you don't wish to slum it with us lot.

Whatever you decide I'm sure we could accommodate you somehow! Let me know your thoughts.

hi Fubar
im happy with whatever arrangements the group goes with, happy to share with another lady but a dorm with 7 sweaty men mightt be a wee bit much for me lol

Hi Heather, I've contacted the SYHA and they have changed 1 double-bedded room to a twin-bed room (the other hostel booking was a twin anyway), I'll PM you with payment details and ensure that you will only share with another lady, if any others come forward. Hope that's ok, let me know if any problems.

I have finally weighed everything I will need. I am surprised!

Total load on the bike (including the rack) will be well under 5kg! Then the usual 1kg of tubes and multitool in the saddle pack, and making use of jersey pockets.

It all fits in the bag too, with a little to spare for toothbrush/toothpaste and small suncream bottle. Looks like the bar bag will not be necessary after all.
