Another daft question ( I am ignorning the gear thing, I have had the gear thing explained thoroughly but I am still a bit huh? the bikey fixey man will be explaining the gear thing to me with visual aids)

Whats a freewheel? I thought fixed wheel you did not have gears? or is it that you just have one cog and one gear and so you need to change the gear to one that suits you?
Sort of. The freewheel is a mechanism using pawls ( sprung sticky-out teeth thingies- I think Ken Dodd has the patent) and a ratchet cog inside the hub to allow you to stop pedaling so the wheel spins round.
A fixed gear bike has no freewheel, so the rider cannot coast...they still have to pedal downhill. They are mostly ridden by men with beards and satchels.
A bike with just one gear on the back wheel is a single speed. It may or may not have a freewheel. Some have flip flop hubs that can be reversed to give the rider a choice.

Flip flop hubs are rarely found on a beach cruiser, despite the name.

I hope you realise what is going on or at least when it comes to explain why bicycles have 2 wheels.

Interesting (and rare) use of the correct terminology from someone who claims to know nothing ;)

'Fixed gear' = despite being a popular reference term, does not exist. Fixed wheel is the correct term. Track bikes are fixed wheel.

Do I need to get the spray plaster out?

Ah I see. Now I understand that makes sense.... See @potsy now I understand the bit about turning the wheel around.

Seriously? I do not claim to know nothing, I claim to know very little. So as a *spoiler alert* for you this thread if someone also says something I do not understand is likely to be filled with what some people may think are "stupid" questions and I am grateful for the people who are willing to take time to explain things to me preferably in terms of "sprung sticky-out teeth thingies" so that I can understand. So if all you are willing to contribute is snide remarks and digs *move along nothing to see here*

I'm perfectly aware of what's going on, but thank you for your input just in case.....

No you do not. See post 10.

Like I said, 'fixed wheel' suggests someone who actually knows what they're talking about. I just think you know more than you're letting on - or maybe it was just a lucky guess. Anyway, for that reason, ah'm oot.

No it means that @potsy explained to me about his fixed wheel bike and I got what he said... I did not understand about the turning the wheel around and was distracted by small people, I now understand the turning it around.

@Puddles just to close off the freewheel/fixed debate. Basically wusses like @potsy ride with a single speed freewheel, whilst real men like me (and as we have met, you know this is true) ride fixed. Simples.
Oh TVC

So ( :banghead:)

when @potsy "turns the wheel around" it is a single speed freewheel (so his little spotty leggies are not turning like whirlwinds downhill)

whilst yours, does not turn around and is not freewheel it is fixed and your long manly leggies* pedal downhill like the strong manly wind? You have grown a beard and now carry a satchell?

(*Disclaimer: I have to say that after my 4 y/o daughter subjected TVC & Lu to an account of what happens when you eat sweetcorn)
