A test may have been flipping the chain, to see if the clunk disappeared, but too late now.
How could that possibly work?

I don't know, saw here a chance to narrow down to an explanation, that worked for me latest, put a new chain on very worn sprockets and reoccurring clunk, never had before. Returned home, took chain back off to check teeth, decided to flip chain when back on, clunks were gone, fixed gear bike. How could that possibly work?

The quicklink has a direction due to the clip that should be at the outside and closed end in the running direction, so directly after removing the open U, I put it back in from the other side.I'm impressed that you even knew which side was which after you'd taken it off.
If it was me I wouldn't have a clue. But then I don't have a clue about a lot of things
The LBS mechanic said it was about normal.
