I think you'll find that it's 1-4 for a copy. ;-)

I used to think they were saying 1-4 for a coffee. :shy:

But I was only about 13, and using his cb without my brother knowing.

Probably explains why I didn't get many takers though.

There were two standards back in the 80's I think. One was the CB that everyone used in their cars, trucks and back bedrooms and the other was a different one that very few people used. My brother and I used the other system with hand held units as two way radios for work.

I had one at home and we used them at the farm. Several other farms in the area started using them and we stayed on the same channel most of the time. I haven't seen any whips on cars or tractors for ages.

My music enjoyment was marred by a tart calling herself Cleopatra Jones who operated a home based boosted rig that would breakthrough and broadcast through my hi fi system.

I have nothing but negative feelings towards CB having been forced to listen to the drivel that was exchanged over the airwaves. Facebook is the 21st century replacement in my opinion - it's equally tedious but at least you can excise the scribings of the drivel merchants.

I think that you are referring to the AM and FM sets. AM was never legalised, IIRC, because it caused too much interference with other transmissions.

Unless you are a little more out there and thinking of SSB and the like. :becool:

We had them in every vehicle on our farm too, but they have been completely replaced by mobile phones.

Ah..the good old CB 27/81 standard.

Here's my old (pic taken in 1993) setup....

Bonus points to anyone who can correctly name everything in that pic. I do cheat however, as more than one of those units was hand built by me so you'll have to take a punt at what it does.

Yes in the late 70's I had a rig at home, with a large aerial in the loft so as not to advertise the fact to the neighbours, and a rig in my car.

Last night I was browsing on-line at the Maplins catalogue and ever so briefly considered getting a CB for our campervan. But if I were to take an electric drill to the van to fit an aerial, my wife would take the drill to me and make me a new ar$^hole.....

And no, she wouldnt allow a mag mount on what little of the bodywork is steel and not fibreglass.....

Do they still make "proper" 40 channel or 80 channel CB walkie talkies? Not the small 8 channel "personal communicators" that are on sale in high street stores.

We rigged up two vans in 2009 with CB from the mid 1990's so we could travel in convoy to Switzerland and back.
We had the units on for at least 6 solid days and during that time never picked up a single other transmission, so I guess CB has joined the great telex machine in the sky
