Not had cataracts but used contact lenses for a while when I had to drive for work and also be able to read reasonably close at other times of the day.
Didn't find specs so convenient for work, but use them rather than contacts now I'm away from that job.
Only needed one lens for distance as other eye was fine for reading and with the distance lens in my dominant eye, all was fine.
Decided to try multifocal contacts once but found that they weren't as sharp for distance or for reading, so I was worse off.
No idea if implanted lenses would be the same.
Guess it depends on how well your brain interprets the images.

I had my right eye cataract done in 2020 just before Covid by the NHS. Quick and simple and now I only need glasses for reading (don’t really). The lens was measured by a nurse about one month before the operation and it’s just perfect.
No need to go private but the NHS may send you to a private specialist for Cataract removal it won’t cost you a penny.

Mrs Optic (yes, the clue is in the name) had her cataracts done last year. With our background, she chose to go for single vision implants. Multifocal implants can result in a loss of image contrast and possibly flare when night driving.

Like all things the surgeon’s experience can influence a decision but, as commented above, difficult to change your mind later whereas reading specs or varifocals are easy to adjust to your own preferences
