i'll have a look at the cassette anyway with a view to dremmelling it. hadn't thought of that, thanks for the suggestion. I had assumed they were 'just one block', rather than separate sprockets riveted together with spacers in between.

coincidentally i bought a new dremel grinding bit today. I actually dremmelled out the seat stay cable stops on my mtb to take full length outer from the back of the top tube all the way to the mech.

Are you positive that they are rivets? Most that I've encountered were tiny Allen screws...1 or 2 mm.
