I don't think it's so much the Carreras as problems with Halfords setting them up poorly. I am pretty sure I have read numerous excellent reviews on the Kraken.

I bought a carrera tdf road bike from halfords two years ago, and I think its fantastic, never had any major problems with it, and used it daily for my commute.
I wish the new, three times the price, bike I have just bought was as trouble free!
I'll be back on my carrera for the rest of the week while my new bike is repaired

Carrera LTD Kraken, that must be a few years old as we havent sold the LTD for a few years now. There's nothing wrong with Carrera's, especially the Kraken, it's even been voted best sub-£500 bike out there by Mountain Bike Magazine (or someone similiar) and is very very good, as long as the setup is done correctly there should be no problem.

I believe that Carreras are made by Merida, which is one of the world's biggest cycle manufacturers and a decent make. (the name Merida will be stamped somewhere in the rear triangle of the frame if yours was made by them).

I think the problems are in the variable quality of Halfords service rather than with the bikes.

Without a doubt the Carrera is a great bike, but have to agree with the first comment. Halfords themselves give the bikes a bad name with there bike building. Bought mine 7 weeks ago and had to get it checked out by a proper professional as the set up was appalling. Once sorted, my carrera is awesome

Unfortunatly some of the bikes that are sold are exactly true, hense when we build bikes, if we notice it untrue, we will true as good as possible. Unfortunatly thats the downside to buying a boxed bike, you wont know what the state of it untill you get it home (or check it at the store), hense why Boardmans are not sold in boxes to anyone except professionals.

What stores did y'all go to to get the bikes setup?

I've got a Carrera. Did 3500 miles on it before upgrading. It was pretty much bombproof. Can't complain at those sorts of prices.

Bought mine from the Carmarthen store in west Wales. They built in store and it was terrible, wish I checked it in store before taking it home. ..... And they said it was ready to ride away ha ha

I wouldent know anything about that store, may have rang them up once or twice. When collecting the bike you would of signed a PDI form to say that you were happy with the bike it in its condition and that the person who handed it over to you had checked it over to say it was safe to ride.

Not sure about other stores but our store has a Cytech technician who is qualified with majority of things inc brake bleeds and wheel building..

No problem with my cheap and cheerful Carrera Crossfire Hybrid. It's been bomb proof and will see me through another winter when I tuck the road bike up like a hibernating tortoise.

I agree that it's a bit hit and miss when buying from Halfords wether you will get your bike checked or built by someone who cares. They do have some good people in their stores but you can't beat the service offered by a LBS.

The problem with that is Halfords wont let you ride it before signing so you can't tell if its right or not.

Had same prob with my local giant store.

Nothing wrong with Carrera, the bikes are solid and a good buy at the right price. Halfords setting-up abilities are a bit variable though.

My brother got himself a Centos MTB, it rides well and isn't outrageously heavy.
