Essential step to qualify as a decent mechanic that! The other is stripping square tapered crank threads by leaving the isis/octalink cap on crank extractors... :blush:

Er, I stripped a crank thread too! In my case, by screwing the body of the extractor in while the centre bit was partially extended, so not enough of the body of the extractor was engaged in the crank thread when I started trying to pull the crank off!

Nattering away I once stripped the threads on a crank by simply neglecting to undo the nut before using the extractor (old style cotterless with a screw-in cap and 14mm nut)
