We've got an inflatable one. I've never been in it, it's strictly a boys toy.

We bought a second hand one a couple of years, it's a kayak that can comfortably take 4 people. Great fun on the canal, never been stopped by anyone. We also use it in Salcombe harbour, where you do get checked but it's only about £14 for the year.

You can pickup lots of used kayaks for not a lot of money, there doesn't seem to be a huge used market so pickup a second hand bargain.

No buts, just showing that a canoe and kayak can appear very similar.

No they can't, a canoe and a kayak are completely different craft designed for different jobs.

Canoes are designed for competition and to be easily manoeuvred.

Canadian canoes are designed for stability, load carrying and shallow water.

Kayaks are designed for speed and long distance travel at sea. The kayak was the secret weapon that allowed the Inuit to live successfully in Arctic waters and it was failure to embrace Inuit technology that caused the Vikings to fail to colonise Greenland.

Sea kayaking, my other great love. Here's a photo from a four day trip around Rassay and Rona I did a couple of years back.

I was walking along the banks of the Leeds Liverpool canal yesterday when i saw a canoe on the water. The bloke wasn't going too fast just tootling along seeming to enjoy himself. The last time i was in a canoe was about 40 years ago when we used to make them at secondary school from fibreglass, then sail them on the canal next to the school. Have any of you owned a canoe or used one regularly? I'm tempted to buy one but i don't know about the rules and regulations. Could i sail it on the canal without anyone questioning it and could i sail it on the local reservoir. If so would i need a license?

Saw 4 canoests when riding the Etape Caledonia on Sunday at Grantully, fairly common to see canoes/kayaks up here.

Unfortunately, I have to disagree. In some instances, a kayak and canoe, on face value, are virtually identical. Seating and paddle being the only differences e. g. K1 (kayak) slalom and C1 (canoe) slalom (see pic I posted earlier). Both very similar to the untrained eye.
there are a huge array of both kayaks and canoes. Kayaks are designed for all sorts of purposes including touring (long distances) as well as river running, slalom, play boating, all manner of racing and general recreation, to name but a few. If you look, you'll see that a multitude of canoes are designed for all manner of activites, including most of what I've listed for the kayak.
As I said in an earlier post, intrinsically, though there may be the odd exception, the main differences between canoe and kayak are the paddle or paddles and the seating/ kneeling arrangement. A quick nose on Google will confirm this.

I think they'd allow canoes but i reckon the fees would be quite high.
Funnily enough I'm just contemplating starting some canoeing myself. Haven't been in one for around 25 years TBH, so I'm very much planning to go to a local club HERE.

As for costs the above club are charging £20 pa for membership, and £5 per session including the use of any equipment you need, all of which I consider to be a bargain in this day and age.

If you fancy a mooch over this way they meet on a Monday night. I'm hoping to get there for a sniff myself this Monday if I get back from work in time :okay:
