Pas de lieu Rhone que nous...

Surely you paddle a canoe, rather than sail it? I want to paddle down the Ribble but I'm beginning to appreciate that the problem is not the water level or weirs but places to put in and take out and angry anglers who resent canoeists and throw stones at them.

I have also been recently thinking about a kayak for paddling around the lakes and rivers in my area. I think there are nearly as many different types and sizes of kayaks as there are types and sizes of bicycles for cycling. More new terminology to learn as well.

I kayak but I don't surf.

You can sail some canoes. I had a Solway Dory canoe up to a couple of years ago. It was about 6" wider than a regular paddle type one which makes it a bit more awkward to paddle. Sail could be put up/down on the water.
Not really a thing for canals though.

Used to canoe a few times in a summer, a few years ago now. Dad and I used to do it together - a good deal of fun! We once canoed out to a sand dune on the other side of the river, then camped there overnight before canoeing home. Just found these pictures on FB.

"Do I really have to carry all this, Dad?"

Note: The brand name on the back of the lifejacket is not reflective of the wearer. Also, the wheels didn't help much with speed or efficiency.

Yes but....
No buts, just showing that a canoe and kayak can appear very similar.

I was walking along the banks of the Leeds Liverpool canal yesterday when i saw a canoe on the water. The bloke wasn't going too fast just tootling along seeming to enjoy himself.

I've noticed them on the canal too Accy and thought it'd be a nice hobby, I only live 2 mins from it too. Tbh I don't know how they get in and out of them from the towpath and would feel silly asking. Mebbe they just go back and forth between locks?

The minefield expands. Skiffs and rowing boats use oars, kayaks and canoes use paddles. Now watch @nappadang come and spoil my perfect definition again.

ah I see. so if the paddle becomes an oar depending on what kind of boat you're in. Is that like port becoming starboard depending on whether you're going upstream or down. And red (navigation) lights being green in USA. And water going down plugholes in nrthern or southern hemisphere.
