I was walking along the banks of the Leeds Liverpool canal yesterday when i saw a canoe on the water. The bloke wasn't going too fast just tootling along seeming to enjoy himself. The last time i was in a canoe was about 40 years ago when we used to make them at secondary school from fibreglass, then sail them on the canal next to the school. Have any of you owned a canoe or used one regularly? I'm tempted to buy one but i don't know about the rules and regulations. Could i sail it on the canal without anyone questioning it and could i sail it on the local reservoir. If so would i need a license?

If you join the BCU (British Canoe Union) you will be covered for all canals and some* rivers.
Lakes are a bit sketchy, some are private.

Canoe or kayak?

You need a licence for canals but since the Canal & River Trust took over The Man is rarely seen so I don't think anyone bothers anymore

Canoe. One of those you sit down in with the waterproof bit around your midriff(i think)Not one where you sit on top,or one where you kneel down in.
There's a reservoir a couple of miles from me where they have a sailing club. http://www.sail-elsc.org.uk/Site/Home.html I think they'd allow canoes but i reckon the fees would be quite high.

Every time he heard the word 'canoe' (which, granted, wasn't that often) my dad would instantly launch (pardon the pun) into singing this ditty.
