not made of wood and doesn't have a ceder shingle roof - quite the idea in a place where wild fires are likely

Makes you wonder if other buildings around it had also been constructed similarly if there would have been as much of a push into the city or whether the firefighters would have been able to contain the fire as there would be less fuel.

I suspect the fire would have stopped once it was out of the forest.
The really nice houses in the hills would have been burned, but once in the suburbs there would be nothing to burn.

I think it would have still got some way into the city just through the intensity, but the structures would certainly have been more intact and the spread would have been slower so it might have been easier to build up some containment.

It will be interesting to see what the outcome of this is.

Reported in The Telegraph (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/ea...ains-as-UK-stores-up-problems-for-future.html) with the report "Senior EA officials have been among thousands of social media users to share a photograph in recent days showing flood waters lapping around a sign marking a development site with permission for 39 new homes, near Whalley in Lancashire ..."

Reported 2015 (before the days of AI creating these fake images).

Not suggesting everything reported in The Telegraph is 100% true but it does go on to discuss the site in more detail.

what amazes me is how dry the area is in the middle of winter.
lovely climate, thats why the rich and famous live there, not many choose Scotland which is often the very opposite of warm and dry

but are tradition stone / slate UK type houses that safe? there was a grass fire near London a few years back that took quite a few houses

"damaging 17 houses, five garages, 12 stables, a car repair workshop and several vehicles, as well as numerous sheds and outbuildings."

As I said upthread this subject is of some concern to me, we have a small woodland that is quite close to the house, and in hot summer weather folk have barbeques on the other side of it - how best to protect your house?

We've heard harrowing stories about people leaving their house with just what they can fit in their car.
And old ladies got out by relatives in similar fashion, having lived in their house for decades: they have lost all their memories.

I do find it slightly surprising that people are not making prudent preparations in case the fires get closer, by shuttling a car load or two of stuff to friends in a safe area. Have these people no friends or is this head in the sand / denial of threat behaviour?

The lack of preparation is astonishing given the risk. Even 24hrs is enough to bury something in the garden, take photos of everything, pack a Go Bag and secure digital backups
LA is also an earthquake zone , so bricks and tiles may not be so safe.

Or just not linking cause and effect. No doubt many left in a hurry in large SUV's doing 10 mpg wondering why it was happening to them.

In case you missed it (there is no causative link to your implied cause) (and no apostrophe)

"Wildfires are natural processes that often operate as an integral part of forest ecosystems in the western United States. However, the total acreage burned in California is increasing every year. The increase in burn comes along with a rise in population and urban development, especially development in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI), defined areas with a mix of houses and wildland vegetation. While many wildfires occur in remote parts of California, in 2017 almost an eighth of the acres burned were in the WUI, which is more than twice the previous 10-year average."
