Mr33 above is knowledgeable and suggests the lovely red GT  Hydraulic brakes for starters. Only in a large though (guess a 19")

Specialized do tend to be on the high side price wise on spec compared to other brands. Personally I'd not pay RRP for a bike, always deals out there on older models

Just checked all 3 and smalls out of stock and as I'm a tiny 5'6 I'd assume I need a small frame

Can't speak for the Cannondale or Giant although I currently have bikes by both those brands. Happy with both. The GT Avalanche was just a great deal of fun though. Good ride character.

Yeah you'd probably want a small... I'm a shade under 6 ft and had the Avalanche in a Medium.
Drat!

I would be a *touch* cautious on the sizing though because Marins come up slightly big, well my 2010 is a 19" and is quite big for me.

And there's a black Trek on that site too, in-budget...

Spoilt for choice, eh!

Not sure if I'm right but if I was to go then on line route would it be best emailing and telling them the inside leg measurement . TBH the only reason I was going the LBS route was because it was face to face and sizing was easy

I'd agree with regards to the shock on the spesh, but to be honest most shocks on base models tend to be a bit naff. My son has the GT 3, great bike hydraulic brakes are ace but again a basic fork. But as others have said for the riding you describe I'd ditch the fork (they just add weight). But my way would go down the hybrid route (some are very nearly MTBs anyway). They will be perfectly at home on the canal / forest trail and be much better on the road.
