Evening all,
Today I had a new bike delivered from Decathlon, Elops 500 by DHL.
I was cycling along my merry way in the countryside for about 7km and then there was a huge crack/bang when I switched from 4th to 5th gear and the pedals jammed, can't pedal forward, they completely stuck and it took a decent hole out of the plastic derailleur protector around the gears that protected the spokes.
It appears that there is either some damage or something not quite right with the Derailleur since it looks bent and in a strange position/angle - the chain goes straight from the gear groves, to the bottom of it, whereas I can see a small wheel with another gear grove, that the chain bypasses. I assume the chain needs to go around that too, but I cannot make it do that and everything looks a little bent.
Does this sound like an expensive job to fix? I don't have a Decathlon store around me, nearest one is 2 hours away on a train, and sending it back by courier, of course will cost an arm and a leg as you can imagine, so unless it's an expensive job do you think I should get a bike repair shop to have a look at it?
Incidentally I rode another elops 500 in another country (just moved back to UK) from new for months and the gears felt far more harsh changing on this bike, so I don't know if that indicates it was already not quite right when it got here?
Any ideas on cost or what I can do?
