Just attended a brilliant bike maintenance course at the Birmingham Bike Foundry. Paid 30 quid for a four hour course that dealt with setting up and indexing rear mech, setting the front mech, setting up and adjusting brakes (V, Caliper and Cantis), changing brake and gear cables, maintaining transmission and safety checks on the bike. For a mechanical numpty such as myself this was an excellent course and super value for money. Very friendly people and I am much more confident in carrying out these tasks by myself. No question was too daft to ask. They also run a longer two day home mechanics course which is a hundred quid I think. Well worth a look if you are struggling with these tasks and you live in or around Brum.

My missus bought us the technical skills course run by these guys at Woburn Sands and I can thoroughly recommend it mate. If their maintenance courses are as good as their skills courses it'll be worth a look. I agree it's probably a bit to far for you to come but keep a look out locally as I'm sure somebody will be running something similar in your area.

Woburn Sands is probably just over an hour away now the new Bedford bypass is in! I think it's MK these lot run their bike maintenance courses. Might see if I could get a deal if I booked a skills course too!!!!?!! Worth asking the question!

I keep meaning to book myself onto this, Stirchley's only around the corner for me. I managed to teach myself to index the rear mech but I'm not keen on trying much else for fear of breaking something.

Mate, I was exactly the same but in just one afternoon with these guys i can honestly say I would feel totally confident in carrying out the maintenance. They made it all so simple and made sure you could do it by working with you. Gonna book meself on the 2 day home mechanics course as soon as I can. Highly recommended mate

Sure is mate and no harm in asking. Hope it works out for you.^_^

Cheers pal

Well done to all of you who have gone on a course and tackled your own maintenance. Working on bikes is hardly rocket science, and you can save yourself a considerable sum of money, as well as having the convenience of doing a job when it needs to be done, and not when the shop can fit you in. I recommend that you invest in the proper tools to do the job; they make life so much easier and they do not eat anything when waiting on the shelf for the next time you use them. Things like good quality cable cutters are streets ahead of old pliers if you have to recable a bike.

I did a course with http://www.cycletrainingwales.org.uk/ on Saturday. A full day for £65, it provided all of the basics.

It was enjoyable and I gave the bike a service yesterday with no problems. I'll soon make my £65 back by not giving it to a bike shop.

I agree that none of it was rocket science but I was still getting some of it wrong and not even trying gear or brake adjustment.

Awaiting for local curse to be confirmed near me, Essex. Learnt a little bit rebuilding the bike I saved from the skip, but still got to be worth attending a professional course
