That's a bit like saying no need to bother with LibDem policies because they will never get into power. And now we have been through a PR referendum they have been agitating for for years. Personally I prefer a precautionary principle. The risk is much lower now but only because of the effort put into countering the earlier efforts. And but for those efforts the HIghway Code would now also be requiring us to ride on cyclepaths not the road - another minority issue that nearly made it through.
I take your point, but I disagree. It will appear that way to some, but not to others.
I disagree about the impact of countering earlier efforts. It will appear differently to different people, is a sort of self-justifying on non-jutifying Rashomon way. There was a joke about a man walking up and down spreading Tiger Powder on Peckam High Street. "But there are no tigers here!" protested his friend. "See", he said. "It works!" You and I have different views here.
I feel similarly about the cycle paths issue. It may have progressed a little without interference, but the buffers on that branch line were erected way before enactment was even a dream.
As to the LIbDem thing.... As a left-leaning Liberal (pre-SDP alliance) I am probably closer to them than almost any other current mainstream party, although I think their PR fascination is bunkum. I was giggling along with Cameron and his Tory toffs on that one - despite finding him a feckless clown. He could offer a thousand PR referenda to his coalition partners... It wasn't going through. He knew it. His party knew it.
On other issues that nearly made it through but didn't: I nearly won the Euro Millions Lottery last week. And I don't even buy lottery tickets!
