Bradley Wiggins calls for safer cycling laws and compulsory helmets

Yes. I do. Most people think the pro-compulsion hordes are imagined. Insofar as they are real, they have no power or influence in the UK legislature.

That's a bit like saying no need to bother with LibDem policies because they will never get into power. And now we have been through a PR referendum they have been agitating for for years. Personally I prefer a precautionary principle. The risk is much lower now but only because of the effort put into countering the earlier efforts. And but for those efforts the HIghway Code would now also be requiring us to ride on cyclepaths not the road - another minority issue that nearly made it through.

I would like to throw my thoughts into this one, so here goes:

It should be the choice of the individual, I personally would not ride without one, but have no right to impose my thoughts upon others.
Wearing a helmet could protect your head in certain cases, but against the full force of the impact of a vehicle I would imagine something like a Sherman tank would be your best form of protection.
A lot of incidents are caused by vehicle drivers that either lack the necessary skills to deal with a situation such as a cyclist or are just too agressive and impatient to wait for an appropriate opportunity to undertake a manoeuvre with a cyclist or even horse rider. There should be more emphisis placed on education in this field.
Unfortunately there are incidents when cyclists don't necessarily do themselves any favours by the way they act. This can also get motorists backs up.
As for Bradley whilst I think the man is a hero and has done wonders for British cyling, unfortunately I think he is getting into the world of the Premiership footballer that starts to lose reality with the normal world.
I have not doubt when he goes out training he is more often than not escorted by various members of the sky band wagon. I think back to the pre Tour article in CW about Tenerife, and in al the shots the car was following his training ride.
He is an elite racer so gets to race on closed roads.
I realise how dangerous that is but he isn't dealing with other motorists.
As others have said making helmets compulsory in other countries can lead to the decline of people cycling and thus increase obesity which is also a massive killer.

A Cochrane review isn't a study as such - but a review of studies. I'm not aware of any Cochrane review that has looked at the efficacy of helmets.

I hadn't heard of it, and can't find it anywhere. Probably R4 being crap.

Bradely Wiggins' conception of cycling is warped by isolation from mass cycling. He spends his time in training camps. He's no more across what happens in towns and cities than the average MP from rural Lincolnshire. He's not knowledgeable about cycling injuries and fatalities, and he's not that analytical a character - people do his analysis for him. Doesn't make him any less off a cyclist, but that's all one can say

He used to be a London resident as well, but as London has changed enormously as a city in the 15 years since he lived there, his experiences are obviously now irrelevant.....

I take your point, but I disagree. It will appear that way to some, but not to others.

I disagree about the impact of countering earlier efforts. It will appear differently to different people, is a sort of self-justifying on non-jutifying Rashomon way. There was a joke about a man walking up and down spreading Tiger Powder on Peckam High Street. "But there are no tigers here!" protested his friend. "See", he said. "It works!" You and I have different views here.

I feel similarly about the cycle paths issue. It may have progressed a little without interference, but the buffers on that branch line were erected way before enactment was even a dream.

As to the LIbDem thing.... As a left-leaning Liberal (pre-SDP alliance) I am probably closer to them than almost any other current mainstream party, although I think their PR fascination is bunkum. I was giggling along with Cameron and his Tory toffs on that one - despite finding him a feckless clown. He could offer a thousand PR referenda to his coalition partners... It wasn't going through. He knew it. His party knew it.

On other issues that nearly made it through but didn't: I nearly won the Euro Millions Lottery last week. And I don't even buy lottery tickets!

No. He said "They gotta be a safer option for minor accidents tho right?" and when asked why it mattered said he'd rather have a headache than concussion. Concussion is not classed as a minor accident.

Let's put it this way then. If you are right nothing happens. If you are wrong, we end up with mandatory helmets as has happened in many other countries. I prefer not to bet my future on you being right so will continue to take the precautionary approach against you being wrong because the price otherwise is too high.
