I did the other week, and on the same run last night, I was 5mph faster on my max speed (with a lid on), same route.

Risk compensation, eh? Not really, no. I like going fast downhills, and I start to get glimpses of fear in the high 40s, but I think this has to do with realizing how little margin there is for error, whether in descending skills or front-wheel maintenance. I have chickened out of topping 50mph on the most promising downhill I know, because I don't trust sheep not to do anything stupid. I think it would have been the same if I had been lidded.

Yes I have worn them before. And I wouldn't say. Except ^ to Smeggers, who asked nicely. It isn't possible to be absolutely sure that one's behaviour is the same with or without lid, but luckily it doesn't much matter.

Oh dear. That's my nice trip to The Harp Inn in Old Radnor scuppered this evening then. On second thoughts, perhaps I'll just enjoy a few pints and the spectacular views, and wobble contentedly back up the road without giving your po-faced strictures a second thought.

So you support mandatory helmet wearing despite the fact that it has been shown to decrease the safety of cyclists... whilst claiming it's 'for the sake of safety'.

I think we need to take a step back here. What is the scientific method? And why is it better than anecdote?
