In case anyone comes across this thread I thought I would update it with the result
Decided on second hand - decent make, alloy framed, non suspension in good con.
Missed out on a couple before getting a Scott Jr Scale with 24 inch wheels for £100. 2 years old but in absolutely superb condition
The same as new + my son riding it for 1 week. It will NOT be in the same nic once we sell it on in 2 years!
2009 version selling for £320 - £370 so I am well pleased and more to the point so is my son!
For the size .. he is slightly above average height and will be 10 end November
He could ride a small frame 26" wheel bike but is more comfortable on the 24" More manageable and manouverable.. I think he feels its a bit like a stunt/jump bike a la Danny Macaskill
He will only have it for 2 years and then on to something else but the bike will be perfect for him in that time
