Local free ads - Gumtree - Friday ads etc ... will throw up a number of Carreras. Try one out in the local Halfords to get the sizing right. Do you have pal who could look one over with you ?

The Crixus is not the lightest machine but for the money I'm really impressed with it.

Do your local authority do any loan to buy schemes?
I got my Dawes Mojave from the local authority Cycle Boost scheme for £100. Brand new bike, it's a great all rounder for shopping, commuting etc.

Have a look for second hand Triban 3 or 5 pretty decent bikes and normally go for the price range you mentioned in first post.
They are decthlons own brand bikes.
