The other night I got a knock at the door at midnight. A lady who was walking her dog had seen someone trying to climb over my garden wall and decided to knock the door.
I went out the back and found some guy trying to break into my garden shed - my road bike being the only thing of any real value in there (unless he could sell on a small Flymo?!?).
Without saying anything I ran at him and he scurried away back over the wall. I managed to deliver one punch to the back of his trailing leg!

The shed is always locked, and my bike (probably unbeknown to him) is also locked up inside. But now I have resorted to placing my wheelie bin in front of the shed door too, hoping the noise of moving it will make the dog bark and subsequently wake me.

I've warned the neighbours and luckily no one else has experienced an attempted theft.

Anyway, I move house in 2 weeks! But the little episode really angered me! :cursing:

Lucky it was someone who bothered to let you know, I dont think many people would bother. Id be keeping the bike in the house for the last 2 weeks though.

Fast and careful!
Certain areas of Gosport contain a number of hard up characters, that are opportunist thieves, there are social problems galore,we went to a christening at Bridgemary and its the only place I have ensured the car was locked, but saying that thieves are every where and I must say when we go to the rugby ground we always have a great day, well done for scaring him off

... Today I got my Cannondale Synapse... It's not only staying in the house; it's coming to bed with me!

I told our local bobbie - my wife's auntie.

To be fair, I live in one of the nicer areas in Gosport in a quiet cul-de-sac, I just think theives are everywhere!

Probably just as well he got over the wall. I know that with the adrenalin running its easy to get carried away .As much as I disagree with it if you had injured the thief while he was trying to get away you would be the criminal.

Glad you didnt lose the bike.

It seems that defending your property is a no no in this country and criminals have more rights than honest people. It IS very easy to get carried away [when you'd be arrested] or the little scumbag would have a knife with no fear of using it [and you'd be hospitalised]. Either way it's a bummer. You could try a few nails, point up through a bit of wood inside the shed door on the floor. These little gits usually wear trainers, just don't EVER forget it's there.

i tried the nails in wood method - along with fish hooks on line round the door handle and trip wires as i my shed was being broke into constantly - not only did i get a grilling from the police telling me i was breaking the law and could be sued , the day after it was broke into the last time - it was burnt down - guess the fish hooks hurt . there are some horrible people in this world

That's simply not true. You have the right to defend yourself and your property using reasonable force. If charged, it would be up to the jury to decide whether you had been reasonable, but only a right wing loon would suggest that you should be allowed to administer a savage beating with no consequences.
