Here's another problem.
I notice that some sites seem to measure in-seam and others inside leg.
Now to me and most things I've seen, in-seam is to the floor and inside leg is to the ankle bone.
A difference of 2-3" for me, which changes the frame size.

Arghhhhh

I got confused with all this and found that pluging my info' into the Rose Bikes online calculator gave me a rough idea of my starting point for frame sizing.

Obviously geometry differences between bikes comes into play but it gets you in the right ballpark.

When I eventually got my LBS involved I wasn't a million miles out tbh.

FWIW I had a carrera virtuoso to and had the same problems. Tried shorter stems etc but ended up selling it to a friend [who was more or less the same size as me and it fitted him like a glove]. Ended up getting my old Dawes [old bike fits old git] but to help you Yes I would go back to halfords but only to try EVERY bike in the shop, never mind the "right size" see what feels right. Then take a trip to a LBS and try what they have, have a day out and go to a big bike shop like Evans [or whatever is nearest] and do the same.
Remember YOU do not fit the bike IT must fit you. I know it sounds silly but when you climb on and it feels like it's just part of you you've found the right size [and possibly the right bike].

Just visited a Boardman Halfords store. What a difference.
The guy i spoke to said he always measures people for hight and in-seam and then goes from there.
I asked him to pull out a carrera TDF medium and I tried it for size. MUCH better size.
I told him about my Virtuoso (large) and he said definitely too big for me.
I seem to have a longer leg than trunk, hence the problem with the large bike.
They also get customers to get on a turbo trainer to see how the bike fits before selling which my local one didn't do. They didn't even set it up properly.

Those carbon boardman bikes are nice.
Going to go to a Specialized store next week too.

Sorry not much help with fit. However have just bought a Defy 0 from Ash Cycles. They didnt have the 2012 Defy 1 in my size but offered the same price on 2013 model . I asked if they would discount the 2013 Defy 0 and they knocked 15% off no problem. If you are interested in a Defy then Ash seemed very good to deal with.

thanks , that helps with knowing folk have used them.
going to try one for size in next few days then see what to do.
