So, are chain cleaning machines a no-no?

I think there's a widely, tho' by no means universally, held consensus that they are at best unnecessary, at worst spawn o' beelzebub. Something to do with factory-installed lube in the inner workings being better than anything you could ever replace it with, so cleaning it out is A Bad Idea. Most hereabouts rate the Mickle Method - basically lube it and wipe off the excess. More than once if you're a bit anal.
