Hi all

As I posted earlier, though in the wrong section

Had my giant road bike stripped completely by theives while I was working, literall took everything apart from my frame and tyres as they were locked using Kyrptonites, but makes me soo mad I had good locks, and still they make my bike basically useless.

What can I buy if anything, they will help ensure I dont have to buy another bike, just so theives can nick it or dismantle every single thing on it..

If they're tooled up looking to nick parts rather than bikes, I suspect there's not much you can do.

On the other hand, you can throw away your locks which averts the need to leave it outside and vulnerable.

They do have wire cage type things which I've seen, but they appeared to be made to keep panniers and the like secure... will have a scoot...

edit... this type of thing:

but big enough for the whole bike.

another edit...

(further to manonabike's suggestion)

you could swap all the bolts for these or similar:

How annoying is that? I don't think I could control myself if I ever caught a thief stealing my bike.......

I also use good locks so it did occur to me that thieves my want to take bits from the bike if I make it hard for them to take the whole bike. Fortunately, the bike I ride into town is my single speed so not many components to worry about  however I'm using a little trick I learnt in another forum  to secure my brooks saddle, seat post and stem.... a ball bearing and superglue  - a ball bearing would not let an alan key do its job and it'd take about 30 minutes to remove tha ball bearing ..... so make sure all adjustments have been completed before attempting this little trick.

Sorry your bike got stolen.

Well half of it

Next time use your usual quality D-lock and cable and superglue steel ball bearings in all the hex fixings on the bike

Edit: ^^^^^^^^^^Oh as he/she said

The problem is that bikes are vulnerable and a determined thief will get what they want.

I heard the story of one Rohloff owner who had the rear triangle bolt cropped and the rear wheel and triangle removed!

All you can do is to minimise the risk.

I always try and park where it is busy but with CCTV and always close to a bike that is less well locked than mine and a better target

Thanks for the replies guys

I am gutted, I was bought a Trek hybrid back in april and hasd that stolen.

I then bought this, Giant with Ultegra groupset... and found it completely stripped

It was parked in a busy road location right opposite loads of offices with windows along with 1-200 other bikes, but Im a chef, work shoot hours and the hotel I work in offers no bike/car parking, I cant afford to buy another one so I guess for now, thats it

I have put the frame on ebay as suggested by others and can only hope to recover a little from that

so the Pitlocks etc, are these what I am looking for? ... i just genuinely I cant belive somoeon had the time/tools to strip a bike there and then, Im gutted

Pitlocks are the thing. Do worry about some of the kit on my work bike, Ritchey WCS and Pro kit.

Can only guess how you feel. I live in rural Somerset, but am still paranoid when I take the bike into town. I always try to take it indoors or leave it with a friendly shopkeeper (LBS are usually very helpful to their own customers). The best bet is probable a scruffy-looking frame with middling components, dressed down as much as possible. Cheap cables through the main components might deter casual scumbags, but, if they really want it, they'll probably get it. The best locks only buy time, unfortunately. I've got a padlock which should secure Fort Knox and am in the market for a Fageddaboudit (sp?) chain.

Thanks Im lookinf for info on the pilocks,

Do they protect pretty much anything, i.e the enitre groupset? I never really though about someone taking the whole bike apart until it happened

The fella in my LBS showed me the biggest lock they do. £70 I think it was. Then he said 'but it doesn't matter what lock you've got, if someone wants to nick your bike they can nick it'.

My solution was to buy a knackered bike off Ebay. If I'm going anywhere where I need to lock my bike up in the street, I use that. My road bike never leaves my sight.

Yeah I appreciate that, well I guess the locks themselves did their job, but nothing really prepared my for them taking ALL the components

Thanks again for all the info

apppreciate the sympathy  working 70-80hours a week doesnt leave much time for hobbies hence why I loved cycling to and from on a decent bike, after 2 been stolen, I think is either time to work elsewhere or give up enitrely on a nice bike

I never really considered it happening, and wished I'd have though about it beforehand, but thats how my life is at the moment, just bad luck

Hope your fortunes turn soon.

I've had a bike and a car stolen. I've even been burgled. It's horrible but don't let the bastards steal your spirit as well as your stuff!
