These services, how do they actually work? Is it a case of a bicycle mechanic coming out, attempting repair or taking you and your bike somewhere if unsuccessful? Or is it just a service where you arrange your own transport (taxi say) and reclaim the fare?

In the case of eta, they get you transport home, to a station or a bike shop. There is no repairing involved, you sort that. I think they settle the cab bill directly

There was a story going around audax circles last year, about someone realising it was time to abandon. Rather than schlep to a train, they got out their chain breaker (Hexus II, I'd guess), broke the chain, then called in a rescue
