But don't believe the Thule packaging for their towbar mount which shows it can tilt to allow the boot to open. This doesn't work on all cars (I have a Megane estate, and the rear door hits the bike on the rack if you try). Difficult to try before you buy, as well, as you have to assemble the thing from a box of bits.

We have a Peugeot 206. We carry bikes on the roof, with a pair of Halford's roof bars and an old pair of bike carries of the type that carry the bikes upside down, standing on their saddles and handlebars. (I haven't seen these sold anywhere lately, but Halford's used to do them).

I find it very much easier to get bikes up on the roof with upside-down carriers than right-way-up ones. You lean over the bike, grab it by the seat tube and forks on the other side, and swing it up and onto the car in one movement. When you come to lift a bike onto a right-way-up carrier, you have to lift it far higher because the bits that end up at the bottom are the wheels and chainset. The one spins round when you grab it and the other is oily...

Why have the upside-down ones gone out of fashion?

One of the reasons I recommend www.roofbox.co.uk as the staff knows its stuff. Email or phone and they will tell you what rack works on your car. I have the Tradekar Silverbike 2 with third bike adapter on my car and the tilt does work. On the web site photos, it would seem to work with at least one kind of Megane too.

I just got a new car and today signed up for the bike 2 work scheme to get a new road bike. I would really like to put my bike on the roof but not sure which bits of kit I need to do that.

Understand I need roof bars (Halfords seem like a good bet) but what do I need to attach the bike(s) securely to them and can they also be used for a roof box? Do Halfords sell these too?

Cheers

Paul

Thanks for all the replys guys, Ive taken Jonathan M's advice from the first reply and am going for roof back and cycle carriers. Ive won a set of Thule bars on ebay ready to fit for £54 which is a good deal I believe. When I recieve these I shall be buying the Halfords twinpack and then i'll be sorted.

Thanks again - Joe
