Took pump apart, turned round the wotsit and tyres pumped up, not sure how high they should be, about 60psi now, worried any higher and they'll burst

What does it say on the tyre wall?

As others will tell you, it depends on the tyre, the surface you are riding on and your weight. I run my tyres a bit soft 'cos the towpath is kinda bumpy.
