Simmer boys and girls !!!
Ok .. I'll try to step into the middle of the heated debate to calm things down a bit...
On behalf of the many experienced riders/forum members -
The ppl on these forums do get a lot of newcomers coming on the forums asking for random advice and they have no intention of ever riding. These newcomers then criticise the advice they are given and it can end up in a slanging match. This has led to many of these previously 'bitten' forum members being more careful/cynical of ppl randomly coming on for advice.
On behalf of charlbroon -
She did come on here genuinely asking advice and was brave enough to post a photo of herself for motivation which would have been hard for her to do. So realistically to take the piss etc is unfair. However, granted if the photo also included todays paper with the date clearly shown, it would have made it 'seem' more genuine as some newcomers can post pictures of other ppl.
Here is my take on the situation and charlbroon/experience forum members take this with a pinch of salt, but this is my humble opinion :
Okay, charlbroon i think it is admirable that you wish to get out and get some exercise on a bike but I would suggest caution about throwing yourself straight onto a bike for the exercise, reason being are :
1. Bike saddles aren't the most comfiest of things, everyone knows that you end up with a sore backside until you build up a resistance to it. However the situation is always worse the heavier you are, more body weight which is centralised over a small bike saddle - I have noticed it now that I havestarting cycling again and I am now about 3 stone heavier than I used to be!
2. Hill climbs are always the big challenge for new cyclists and the biggest issue involved in hill climbs is the cyclists own body weight - now that a alot of bikes are getting lighter, the bigger you are the more difficult it is to drag yourself up a hill on the bike - this coupled with the fact that unless you have been cycling/exercising regularly your leg muscles won't be accustomed to generating the power needed to cycle up the hills.
In my opinion you may be best starting out with other forms of exercise to reduce your weight which will make your cycling experience much better.
I personally started out doing a bit of walking regularly which started to shift the weight before I went near a bike again, I appreciate that walking may be sore on your joints (knees/ankles) so maybe swimming could be a good place to start and swimming burns just as much calories as cycling and sometimes more !!
Just a few suggestions/opinions of my own and feel free to take them on board and good luck!
