Apologies for the Americanism "Bicycling"
Am I the only one to spot the absence of brake levers in that picture? So I'm not sure if the facial expression is terror or fun? Anyway, at least she has a bell so everyone else can get out of the way!

Great thread and well done to everyone!
I'm a 5'10" 19 stone lard arse and mega unfit thanks to being off the bike for a few years. My last bike and all my kit got nicked so starting over with a second hand Subway. It's killing me doing a couple of miles at the minute (and killing my arse but thats another thread!) but I'm getting a lot of inspiration from you guys so thanks for posting!

Go for it. I was 17.5 stone a year ago and very unfit indeed. I started commuting to work. The first few times were a struggle but it was surprising how quickly it got easier. With sensible eating I lost a lot of weight (even ater Xmas I am 2.5 stone down) and my fitness gains were huge. Starting from a very low base, admittedly. The fitter you get, the more weight on the pedals and the less on your arse, so the saddle issue gets less. But in your position I would still splash the cash on a decent saddle. It makes all the difference.

Thanks for the reply.
I don't mind spending a few quid on a decent saddle but I worry that it takes a few to get the right one, could be costly!

I'm a big fan of Brooks, although I know many who disagree. I have a B67 on the upright lecky bike and a B17 on the Dawes, and my arse couldn't be happier.
