well done to all of you, a very inspiring thread. I too wear lycra shorts under "normal" shorts as I haven't quite over the "looking like a wally" bit yet, anyway the colder weather is on its way now so it will be lycra cycling tights for the time being.

Hi well its time for an update, i posted a couple of weeks ago requesting help for a 6ft 8 inch 20stone bloke, well here goes got the bike "Goliath" simple reason for the name its massive. well i started very slow and sweaty and well i'm improving what a "BUG" it gets 3 times a week now not very granted 12 miles a trip but to me and my wife a starter.
I love it plain and simple its not the effort it was at the gym we are out and about meeting great people seeing some wonderful sites and enjoying the thrill of cycling. "My very deepest thanks for your help" it has set me on a course i wish i had taken some years earlier, now any of you BIG guys and gals{ no i'm not from Leeds and ex DJ with a cigar} get out there and do it no one laughs no points the finger at the fat guy with the lycra, in fact the oppersite everyone i have met is helpful and only to willing to give advice godd bad you decide

"thanks again to all"

Totally agree with you, a year ago I was the most unfit bloke you could meet I was 5"10 and just under 24st drinking in the region of 30 pints of Stella a week smoking 20 a day.
One day I woke up a decided to buy a bike so went to my local bike shop and brought a Trek 1.1 I could even ride half a mile it killed me, 18 months later I'm regularly riding 60 to 70 miles and down to 12st 6 without a doubt it was the best decision of my life and one that probably saved my life.

Keep going and good luck
I "liked" this but it didn't, somehow, seem sufficient so....that is awesome, well done.

From a fellow "Big Lad on a Bike".

I don't despair, I've convinced myself that there's such a thing as being fit and fat.

But, I'm seriously trying not to eat the whole box of chocolates when I'm out on my bike.

Was some 150 kilos when I started and down to 95 now... (I hate maths so you look how many stones are those) Everyday is a new adventure when you are out riding..!

Great thread  I can't claim any mega mileage but just going from a wobbly fat mum on a bike, to being able to cycle up hills without stopping and keeping up with my kids has made me very happy (on an old heavy jalopy bike). I also go for the odd jaunt just with my husband when the kids are in school which is great as I'm a regular at the gym these days but he is not one for gyms. So the cycle track is where we exercise together. I'm nearly 2 stone down too with more to go.
Not sure I'll ever look at a tiny slim saddle and think it'll fit my butt though! lol

Bumping this up - complete newbie, not been on a bike for 10 years! I'm 6ft4 and 24st and have decided to get back on my bike :-)

I've bought a carerra crossfire2 from halfords and it seems ok (just took it for a 5 min spin to adjust the seat etc).

My only concern, I assume the bike will be "cope" with me on it. I'm planning g on taking it to the forest and cycle paths more so that roads! I don't want to pop the tyres or anything lol!

Noob question I know so sorry for that!!

Some great stories above - definitely a motivator :-)

Cheers

The bike should cope, but when you get to a rough area take your weight on your feet with bent legs and let the bike pivot and move around under you. Dont sit on it like a sack of spuds.

That said, like for like a heavy rider will put more stress on the bike than a lighter rider. One area manufactures skimp on quality is the hubs, so with that in mind it might be worth budgeting to have the wheels re-hubbed if necessary.
