Well guys I finally got around it it and the result was: FAIL, FAIL, FAIL, and bloody FAIL!!!!!!

For a guy with a 2.1 degree, I must be the thickest piece of poo in the world. Anyone got any good youtube or website links? I want to do it myself, but at this rate I may have to take it to the shop

For some reason I can not get the de-railure to move further enough out for it to pop the chain on the top gear.

Help me, please......

Are you hitting the final notch on the ergo shifter ?

If not your cable is to tight, try releasing it with the barrel adjuster until you can.

This is the problem I had when I first set up the gears on my new bike. The instructions I followed said to use pliers to pull the cable tight, so I did, and pulled the cable nice and tight! I then found I couldn't get the chain onto the big ring. It wasn't that there was a click and nothing happened either. The shifters just seemed to hit a "block" and wouldn't move far enough to even make a click. I released some of the tension on the cable, and all was fine.

Then, just to prove that I don't learn from my mistakes, I went through exactly the same process with the rear derailleur!

Thank you, I will try again tonight.

UPDATE:

I took the bike to Treks, and the guys there were great. One small problem tho  He did mention the bike is not in the best of shapes: "the mec's have had it"??? Being a little embassed, I did not ask what this meant, anyone????

Also he did point out, the screw on the left break/gear lever was knackered: the head of the plastic screw has completed be rounded off (not sure if it was like itr before I took it in), anyway how can I remove the screw and replace it?

As a result of the screw being knackered, it looks like there is a gap at the top of the break lever.
