Coke round my area usually comes in a powdered form, so I keep the hell away from it. :giggle:

I drink nice clean water as you can also use it to poor over yourself if it gets warm or to rinse your hands after a mechanical.
you must be doing some major distances to require additional carbohydrates imho
a lot of it is marketing hype by 'sports drink' companies, you do not need to drink before you are thirsty or in timed intervals. You need to learn to listen to your body as that will tell you what you need and water hydrates remarkably well.

Nobody has died in the London Marathon from dehydration caused by lack of drinking however so far six people have died over the years from over hydration called exercise-associated hyponatraemia (EAH)

all valid good advice and what i meant was don't leave re hydration till you feel like some bad thing is going to happen! over hydration, just don't drink loads when any monkey on the corner could tell you it's too much and yeah a lot of it is rubbish the drinks companies tell you so you buy there expensive stuff rather than just drinking water which is all you need and is a lot cheaper
after all miners through out the ages and others doing heavy work were doing more exhausting work then us on our bikes and they only had water

I bet you 99% of all miners supplemented their daily water rations with copious amounts of beer in the evening. Full of electrolytes that stuff is.

I recently started using Zero electrolyte powder, mainly because I cringed every time I read the fine print on the Powerade/Gatorade bottles. They may have the needed electrolytes, but there's a bit of junk in there also, unfortunately. The Zero powder proved useful yesterday, during a 230km ride with 3400m climbing. I ended up drinking 3 bidons worth, with 1.5 tablets mixed with water in each, and no stomach cramps. The taste wasn't sweet like the cr#pades were, but pleasant nonetheless. I also ordered some Nuun tablets, but haven't tried these yet.

I usually use just water and squash for a ride up to an hour. Over an hour I may take a bottle with an electrolyte/ carb mix in.
What you need to do is experiment to see what works for you. I have found that it is better to have a small drink regular and often (15-20) mins than having a large drink every hour.

outlash

also available in orange
If I'm a longer ride, one bottle with water, one with squash (pink grapefruit is my current fave) and a pinch of salt in.

Quite probably the reason why you don't need a drink is because it takes you 90 minutes to do 17 miles ;).
