Noisy and irritating

Rigid Raider said:
Lots of conflicting advice here. I speak French fluently having lived there 3 years, as well as reasonable Spanish. In the end it comes down to your character and the character of the people you most admire - French suits me because I love the sound of it, it fits well within me and I love the French. Speaking their language allows you to penetrate beyond the shyness - often mistaken for xenophobia - and get to know the real French, who I find charming and very correct.

On the other hand I make no effort to speak Spanish because I find Spaniards noisy and irritating. (Lived there nearly 1 year as well)

So who do you most admire and would like to get to know?

I find the a lot of Brits (specially hooligans) going to Spain for summer vacation to be specially noisy (they are drunk 90% of the time) and irritating people.

Wow. Can't believe the thread's still here!

Well, my girlfriend bought me a couple of terms of conversational French lessons so hopefully I will be sprachening the old Francais well sooner rather than later. I still remember lots of the vocab from school days but I'm a bit at sea with tenses so that's what I'll concentrate on, je pense!

Also, don't forget that as you age, you lose the ability to hear frequencies at either end of the spectrum.

I think I read that Russian is the worst for this

You've obviously never heard a group of scottish women gossiping in the pub - it gets so only bats can understand what they're saying!

I only know one word of welsh and that's the most important one: cwrw

Yep. I know it's equivalent in about 8 or 9 languages - and just about nothing else whatsoever.

I'm fairly fluent in Arabic & Japanese and could just about get by in Urdu and Somali. I am currently trying to master Polish with very little success.

My girlfriend is learning Welsh, now that she's working in the Welsh Valleys. I pick up odd phrases, but I don't know much Welsh. Far more useful to me would be Polish, as I meet quite a few Polish lorry and fork lift drivers in the course of my job. It would be only polite and useful to be able to speak to them in their own language.

Yeah, I know what you musos are like. Only need to be able to count to four - starting at two, usually ("Here we go-two-three-four").

Still, better than the Roadies. They only need one-two.
