There is a fantastic road (A470) from Merfyr Tidfil upon over the beacon beacons and down onto the A40 the other side. The views are breath taking and at about the highest point there is a burger van located on the edge of a steep valley with an amazing view over a massive part of Wales. Can be wet and cold at times, so be prepared. Also take enough food and drink to keep you going. Not a climb for those who are not reasonably fit!

My Home ride! But there's a lot more to it than just a ride to Brecon and back! There are several routes to explore, also some circular variations of a truly popular route, the area is of outstanding beauty, with some hidden gems yet to be discovered, especially for road cyclist with climbers legs.

Merthyr to Brecon 18, miles a 36, mile round trip. but can easily be turned in to a circular ride of (name your Milage) any distance.

Come see for yourself.

Unfortunately I dont really have any very good cycling roads near me. All the hilly ones are very challenging and therefore my area is good for building up your climbing skills. There is one road about 15 miles away which I wanted to go around last weekend because it is a 4 mile road which goes around the rim of this huge cliff. Unfortunately it was closed for a classic rally last week but I am hoping to go there again either thrusday, friday or saturday. It is in Llandudno around the Great Orme. The clwydian valley is very picturesque when going down the right hand top road. You can cover miles very quickly down that road.

Edit: North wales BTW

What's the NC5 like near Prestatyn Matthew? I usually cycle to Mold , Flint then head to Chester. Keep thinking of getting Mrs B to drop me off in Llanddudno and cycling home 80+ miles home to Wrexham

It is a relatively easy ride from Llandudno if you follow the coast up to Kimnel bay. From there you have to skip across the Blue Bridge and continue allong the coast up to the end of the route (The Beaches Hotel). You then take the main road past Gronant and head towards Queensferry.
To get to Wrexham you would be best turning off at Fflint and working your way back.

I dont know where you got 80 miles from because it is 15 from Llandudno to Prestatyn then another 25/30 to Queensferry.

Thanks Matthew for the quick reply

I kind of know the roads well in the area, Its just the Cycle Route.com throwing me. I get Llanduddno to Prestatyn as 19 miles and the whole route via Chester and Whitchurch just under 85miles, sorry didn't explain the family stops

Cheers TB

I think the best ride in the country is from Ilkley, up Wharfedale and either over Mastiles Lane (if you like roughstuff) to Malhamdale, and thence to Settle, or over the top to Hawes.

I'd happily ride that road every day for the rest of my life, rather than commuting through Streatham.
