Depends what you want.Visit the Northumberland County Council website and you can download the two maps, which cover from near Durham to near Scotland. Traffic free routes are the red dashes whilst the smoother routes will be the quieter road ones. Kielder or Bellingham make for a good base

Unfortunately I dont really have any very good cycling roads near me. All the hilly ones are very challenging and therefore my area is good for building up your climbing skills. There is one road about 15 miles away which I wanted to go around last weekend because it is a 4 mile road which goes around the rim of this huge cliff. Unfortunately it was closed for a classic rally last week but I am hoping to go there again either thrusday, friday or saturday. It is in Llandudno around the Great Orme. The clwydian valley is very picturesque when going down the right hand top road. You can cover miles very quickly down that road.

Edit: North wales BTW

I have a soft spot for the widdop route from Trawden to Hebden Bridge. Leave Trawden via Burnley Road (becomes Sheffield Lane), Back Lane past Coldwell Reservoir and Activity Centre (good cafe, cyclist friendly.), Halifax Road up Thursden Climb (+20%) and then fantastic high speed windng road past Widdop Reservoir onto Slack, then Hebden Bridge via Draper Lane, another high speed descent.

I've just put in on Bikely here: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Trawden-to-Hebden-Bridge

It's a bit more complicated than that...
I would be interesting in seeing a list, where perhaps I could take the bike one weekend and go for a nice 30/50 mile ride on some nice quiet, smooth roads if that is possible?

Most of the bits of the Chilterns and surrounds that aren't in Buckinghamshire!

I wouldn't for one minute try to say that these are best cycling roads in the UK, however:

If you find yourself in Essex, then there is a loop around around the Hanningfield reservoir (near Chelmsford). You can use this as a base and extend the ride out in more or less any direction. You can seek out some nice, pretty, undulating and best of all fairly quiet and traffic free B roads on the way to Stock, Margaretting, Danbury, Blackmore, Ingatstone, Fryerning, Maldon, Newny Green, Highwood etc.

Anyone who has taken part in London to Southend will have received a slight taster of what I refer to above

(I am actually extending that loop quite far from the resevoir in some instances)

Pont-Y-Cob, Gowerton and the road afterwards going north up there with Lonesome Lane but with better view...

NCN4 north of Llanelli, not a road, but better surfaced than the roads I ride on and again splendid sea views.

The road around the edge of Carmarthen Bay, from Kidwelly to Ferryside. I fell off gawping at the view.

Underhill Lane along the northern foot of the South Downs
I take it the ride went well ?

No decent roads in Wales you ll just have to look somewhere else

Personally I love the back roads between York and Wetherby, apparently the Selby back road's nice as well, but I've never had the pleasure yet

I love Hadrian's cycleway. Could be the novelty factor of it not being in London clouding my view though!

Northumberland.

There are lots of undulating country roads set in beautiful countryside.

I am now even more mindfull of how lucky I am and how much cycling I have to look forward to.
Im five minutes from Hadrians Cycleway. What a way to build up my stamina.
Even better I can use Ovingham to Hexham as my commute.

There is a fantastic road (A470) from Merfyr Tidfil upon over the beacon beacons and down onto the A40 the other side. The views are breath taking and at about the highest point there is a burger van located on the edge of a steep valley with an amazing view over a massive part of Wales. Can be wet and cold at times, so be prepared. Also take enough food and drink to keep you going. Not a climb for those who are not reasonably fit!
