I think I bent my crank in the Emsworth crash last week. Just cleaning the bike up and in the highest gear (ie small cog) the crank arm is catching the chain. Not a happy bunny.

Is the likely to be any other problem that could cause this other than the arm being bent? Although the crankarms do seem to be fairly formidable bits of kit.

sure it hasn't shifted on the bottom bracket, or bent the bb axle?

Not sure. Done the safe thing and taken it to the LBS. I was in two minds about whether or not to contact the CTC about the crash but given this I think I will be doing once I know exactly what's damaged.

LBS did say it could even be the frame out of true but he does think that's unlikely with it being a titanium bike

It's a bit more complicated than that...

If it can be established that a driver was at fault, their insurance will pay for any damage to the bike and also compensation for any injury to you. And it's likely that the driver's insurance premium will be adversely affected at renewal.

Mrs W suffered a cracked rib in an off 18 months ago. Her compensation went a long way towards paying for my new bike.

Trying not to say too much about the crash as it's with the police at the moment. However if you were on the Emsworth ride then you'll already know about it.

Worst case scenario (not counting a bent frame!!), I'd put it at around £150 for a 105 chainset and a new BB. Once I know the cost I'll be calling CTC but I imagine it will take a while for anything to happen.

How in the world did you get away with that?

I'm thinking maybe I should sue myself for damages. Self inflicted numptiness must be covered by one of my myriad insurance policies surely?

Mrs W was, of course, hoping to spend that cash herself, but didn't get to the bike shop fast enough.....

Let's just say that cashflow wasn't a constraint.

Quite possibly. But by the time both sides have paid for legal advice you'd be several grand out of pocket.

Now that I'm off the work computer - Martin and User482 - do consider an insurance claim. Don't let any possible police slowness or reluctance put you off. The standards of proof are different, and you've got plenty of reliable witnesses.

I've started my insurance claim through the CTC today. It's going to set me back £180 to get the cranks fixed along with other little issues that came to light.

Which are?
Front wheel out of true, rear wheel out of true. Saddle needs looking at although I think I've bent it pretty much back into shape. I may need to swap it the one on the commuter if nothing can be done with it. The bike seems to have taken a bit of a battering. Glad I had decided to clean it today after all.
