I wonder whether the opinions of people who object to wearing helmets might change if either they themselves, or one of their nearest and dearest was badly injured due to bashing their head of the pavement?

One way or another, my judgement would be clouded.
I think this argument can be applied to a far more serious, and pressing, issue, running with scissors. The fact that people still keep scissors at home, some of them not even under lock and key, is a great worry. Even a well trained adult finds the urge to grab them and run, when presented with a pair of scissors, almost irresistable, let alone the children. Though public awareness of the dangers of running with scissors appears to be at an all time high, the calls for a scissor ban fall on deaf ears. Obviously some of those are only deaf due to scissor related incidents so some tact should be exercised here.

Talk about helmets is a diversion as they're particularly ineffective in scissor/speed events.

I actually know someone who had an accident while running with a pair of scissors, now he has one glass eye. Only a full face visored helmet would have helped him.
If it's scissors it's got to be Shimano of course, not that Campagnolo rubbish ...

Hit the floor, face first, more times than I care to think about. Broke my nose nearly every time.

Iv'e gone sideways & backwards as well, but no-one has ever suggested that I were a helmet. One doctor even said that it may do more harm actually wearing one than not wearing one. Reason for all these impacts with the floor & or objects on the way down to the floor? Epilepsy.

Back to the cycling side & the only time the head has come into contact, unintentionally with any surface was when I got hit by a car. Problems arose later. These being that the police who attended wanted to speak to me with the helmet off. Given that it, the head, had just taken a heavy sideways impact, it kind of ruled out the reason for wearing it in the first place.

Well I'm disappointed that you all take this so lightly, the web is full of helmet debates but very little on running with scissors. We're talking a no smoke without fire scenario here:-

1. scissors - growing up I think every adult that I had regular contact with mentioned the dangers of running with scissors. I had one Gran who would wax lyrical on the subject, she was laso 'hot' on rats. I don't think rats with scissors ever came up but I'm sure we can all imagine how blood curdling that would be.

2. cycling - I remember adults that taught me to ride, told me to be sensible but not a single one ever broached the subject of helmets. Not even my paranoid Gran, she'd happily wave me off on a bike.

The conclusion is obvious, adults want to wipe out children, they thought that letting children cycle without helmets would do the job, but no, we survived with no ill effects. Realising this wasn't working they came up with a dastardly plan to promote cycle helmets at the expense of information on scissor dangers. You'll know I'm right when pro helmet lobbies start handing out scissors as free gifts. Such a depth of evil, they know the helmets will be useless against the scissors, it'll be a bloodbath.

Now I am back on two wheels I am wearing a helmet again but have noticed an issue I had forgotten about, above 30mph I am getting helmet lift due to the airflow, I must change my lid and see if it helps.

Must be your lid, or the angle you sit on the bike . I have no issue with helmet lift at 35+

In all the helmet debates and in all the information available in the public domain I've never seen a robust and objective analysis that shows how a polystyrene helmet constructed to one of the current standards can provide a degree of protection that's relevant in a cycling accident.

Conducting a program of controlled experiments to replicate genuine accidents on cyclists with and without helmets might be seen by some as unethical.

So for now we'll keep on with guesswork, fear, and emotional blackmail.

Even if it could be proved that cycling helmets provided protection I'd still not wear one because the type of accident that they are designed to protect against only happens, on average, once every 20,000 years or so. (Per cyclist, that is.)
