BBC4 - 8pm tonight... Ride of My Life : The Story of the Bike

A repeat of last year's programme...

Author Rob Penn travels around the world gathering parts for his dream bike.

Apparently the section about the wheelbuilder is very interesting...

Excellent! I remember catching the last few minutes of this last year and was proper gutted that I missed the majority. Fingers crossed it's on iPlayer...

Read the book as well, you know the basic story, but he has some interesting digressions and isn't tied to things he could get footage of.
Met him at the Excel bike show earlier this month – he's a good speaker too.
Like the blue – hate the orange.

Blimey lads, you're missing the point about the colour scheme aren't you? The thing is, Rob was able to speak to the bloke who was building his bike, have a discussion with him about what was possible, and choose the colours he liked best. That's different - and in my view, better - than the situation that you'd face buying off the peg, where even if you're spending a similar amount of money to Rob on some kind of Williercolnago carbon fest, there's a good chance you'd be stuck with some variation on black white and red.

There's no lowest common denominator, "what-will-most-people-find-inoffensive?" consideration affecting the choice of colour - or indeed the rest of the bike. If you go handbuilt, you can have what you want. You don't have to spend what Rob spent either to get there...

Err the bike he turned up on when I met him was a Willier, and colour: Black with red and white detailing .... so he has one of those already!!!

Yep, agree about the colour scheme ... I prefer bright red.

But seems a good bike for £4000 ... not that I could spend that on a bike, but I would have imagined it would have been more, given Rob was handpicking the best bits from numerous suppliers.

Personally though, if it had been me visiting the Campagnolo factory to buy gears etc and give them publicity and they refused me entry, I would have left and bought somewhere else.

Just as a matter of interest, what is the benefit of buying an expensive handlebar ... it's not as if its a oving part or anything and the company even stated that they are all made in Asia anyay, rather than in the Italian factory.

Nice to see the Brooks saddle. Although I ride a Raleigh Equipe at present, the saddle (a Brookes) was from my old Carlton bike, a present for my 12 th birthday in 1970. It is quite comfortable now.

I think the colour scheme was fine.

I kind of agree with what your getting at though.

The campag factory was almost offensive for not letting him discuss more and promote their product. Still a great tailored machine he's got!
