Thanks for your responses. The main thing is that they see the error of their ways - so they don't do it again. Next time the cyclist might not be so lucky. I got the train this morning with my bike to take it back to the shop - a hassle, but worth it as I was determined that they saw what they had - or in this case - hadn't done. Now at least I've got my bike back in working order for a lovely cycle home

What did they say when you took it back, was there any sort of apology given?

I would definitely make a formal complaint about this. If there is doubt in the mechanics competency, then it is something that management should really know about and possibly consider the mechanics suitability for the job.

The supply of goods and services act says that anybody providing a service should do so with good care and skill. Which is hasn't happened in this case, so you should be entitled to a refund. Had you had an accident, under tort law you could have sued the shop for damages. If the management is made aware of the mechanics incompetency then they can rectify the situation by either retraining and supervision or dismissal for gross misconduct.

I was out on Sunday on my Boardman Comp Hybrid cracked my front wheel . Long story short.
Went into Halfords as the bike is less than a year old.
Guy said they would be replacing it free of charge, that was Sunday . Left my contact details and was told they would give me a call Monday.
Phoned them today and surprise surprise they haven't done anything about my wheel as they were too busy.

Not happy but its what i've come to expect from Halfords.
