Wow. But then Australia does have some mental politicians so I'm not entirely surprised.

A couple of winters ago, some local kids were pelting passing cars with snowballs. I watched, vaguely amused, whilst waiting for a bus. Then they hit a car I recognised, and knew things were about to get interesting as it was a mate of mine, a local rugby league player who is massive and scary looking but actually soft as anything. As I suspected he stopped the car and chased the kids, who must have suspected a hiding, but got a fairly hilarious looking finger wagging and a telling off. I doubt any of those kids have made a snowball since.

During the TDU this year I read or heard some where that a high percentage of Aussies are quiet anti cycling for some reason.
I think it's because Australia's been a car-dominated country for many decades, probably largely due to our towns and cities being fairly spread out. Now that some of our cities (e.g. Melbourne and Sydney) are moderately large (4+ million in each), congestion is a growing problem,. This makes motorists frustrated, and human nature being what it is, they take the frustration out on minority groups using the roads, i.e. cyclists. Unfortunately, I can't see this changing significantly in my lifetime.

OK, someone is going to explain this to me slowly (I'm dual nationality, one of which is Australian), what is wrong with a law stopping people throwing things at bicycles?
Nothing wrong with a law to protect cyclists, pedestrians, road workers etc.from assault, I would expect there already to be an all encompassing law for that purpose. It was the perceived need for a specific law to protect cyclists that intrigued me.

It's just the treating of Australia as some sort of freak show. "Omigod, Australian region introduces laws to protect motorists from cyclists! What a terrible country!" "Omigod, Australian region introduces laws to protect cyclists from motorists! What a terrible country!"

ACT is very small. It's like judging the UK by the actions of Westminster council. Westminster is about 2/3 of the size of the ACT, and they both are local administration in the area that holds the houses of parliament ,so I think it's a fair comparison

Shut Up Legs lives in/outside(?) Melbourne and is constantly bemoaning the situation for cyclists against the growing number of angry motorists.

I love Australia and would gladly emigrate there, but the mindset of a growing number of people is so wrong, it's no wonder that Australians are being tarred with the same brush (which is also wrong).

I've cycled in Melbourne and around London, and I think that Sh ut Up Legs thinks the UK is some sort of cycling utopia. I'd say in my experience the attitude from motorists in London is probably worse than in Melbourne and the commuting infrastructure is just catching up in London. And they treat it like a proper carriage way, with proper diversions if it is closed, rather than someone just parking a van across it and putting up a "cyclist dismount" sign. Friends that cycle all over central Melbourne found 1/2 hour on Boris Bikes terrifying.

I'm all for a reasoned discussion on cycling in Australia, but twisting everything that has "Australia" and "cycling" in it into proof of how bad cycling is Australia is not reasonable. Seriously, how many of you would seriously take this news as "look how bad Australia is", if you had just been presented with the facts, not with the bizarre spin that the magazine gave it?

I was going to say that I don't know anything about Momentum Magazine, so I clicked on their logo. This is currently their lead article: https://momentummag.com/carnivorous...ming-vegan-drivers-argues-harvard-researcher/. Hmmm, I wonder if they have an agenda?

No, I hardly think the UK is cycling utopia. I've seen enough evidence on these fora to convince me otherwise. I do happen to think it's a bit better than Australia, though, but that's just my opinion, so feel free to disagree with it.
