I find i get more, uninitiated, recognition from female cyclists than males. It's either because I'm HAF or they've recognised me from Crimewatch.

I'm too old to dislike anyone for what they wear or don't wear. I just ride my bike and smile as i do.

I ride a 105 groupset bike wearing whatever I feel like wearing.

I know people who wear lycra, some of them are sound and some are not. Much like people in general.

I have Acera in my commuter mongrel, and it seems to shift much more quietly than half the commuters riding 105

Nearly everyone I've met along NCN7/73 has said hello and some have even stopped for a chat.

Us tourists are much friendlier than racing types.

The poshest I've ever gone was a deore rear mech on the spa wayfarer and I have to say, there's no difference in gear changing between that or the acera.
The wallet blubbers less when the cheap stuff gets wrecked though.
