Are my clipless pedals knackered?

Which ever part has failed, I still need to be able to get the pedal body off, and re-attach it.

SO, short of getting some new pedals, I will need a re-build kit and a new pair of spindles....!?

No, you need a rebuild kit. the nylock nut has threaded, not the spindle.
