Are 23mm wheels suitable for every day commuting ?

Oh, I'd change those for commuting. Ultremos are what you call a 'race' tyre like Michelin Pro Race, Conti GP 4000's and won't last the miles of a commute - and they are a bit expensive.

While I agree that Ultremo's are not the most durable tyre out there, I have the ZX on my everyday bike, and they are showing little wear after 3000 odd miles. As my winter wheels have a long-standing issue (unresolved due to rider idleness ) the ZXs are coping admirably with winter commuting. Great tyres. Am now commuting on same wheel/tyre combo during the week as I am racing on at the weekend. Mental!

Also you can pick them up for £20 every once in a while, so not all that expensive!

Big thumbs up to Cube for fitting a top notch tyre to even their entry level bikes

To the OP I say, keep the Ultremo's on and enjoy your bike at it's best!

But if you DO (and I also own an Ultremo-equipped Cube), then make sure you regularly check for flints/splits. I wasn't aware that you needed to do this until just regularly and was upset to see just how cut-up my tyres were!

I'm on 23s on the hybrid; commute is via road, gravelly cycle track and a small section of muddy grassy fields. No problems so far. Like has been said before, might be worth considering some puncture resistant tyres.

I looked at couple of brands as I was slightly lairy of the OE 23mm tyres that came with the latest ride, there seems to be a great amount of variation with some 23's coming up like 25's and vice versa dependent on which brand you go for.

I settled on a cheap 25mm with an anti puncture strip in them and no problems so far.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my post, very much appreciated. After reading all the replies i have decided to run with my 23s and the ZXs, as i wont be using the bike to commute untill the weather starts to improve.

Started at the beginning of December on 23s (it's all I have) - 25 mile round trip on muddy, pot-holed country roads and a bit of branch and other rubbish littered cycle path. Schwalbe Blizzards coping so far.
