My son has just started at Soton Uni and wants to buy himself a bike.
I'm thinking something fairly basic, second hand.

I don't know about secondhand but Portswood Cycles is a good all round LBS.

Check out the LBS recommendations sticky in Beginers, there might be something there...

There's Hargroves Cycles in Millbrook, they seemed ok when I went in, and there's one who's name I forget - it's on the way into Southampon from M27 Junction 7, on the left hand side of the road. They seem pretty good - I bought a bike from there way back.

The main ones have been stated. The one Xmister mentions is Cycleworld. There are also GA Cycles and the Hub Cycle Works both in Shirley Rd.

All of the ones mentioned are "new" bike shops - Portswood is probably at the lower end of the market. None to my knowledge do secondhand

My son has just started at Southampton University too!!

A slightly mature student - at the advanced age of 25 - returning to academia to take a MSc in Civil Engineering. He's taken his road bike with him, and I think he went out with the uni cycling club yesterday.

We get a few Southampton Uni guys at our club runs & events and have a few members who work/study there. www.sotonia.co.uk
